22 the little sentinel. Wednesday, November 28. 1979 Edgewater, Boone, Lyman top Central Florida soccer picks and Reed Kinnison, state goalkeeper for the Florida "under 19" team, will have to stop a lot of goals if the green and gold Trojans are to do well for Coach Ernie Chandler. Jones: The Tigers expect the best season ever for Coach Gordon Wei-dow. Jim Lapin, Darin Wolf, John Taylor and James McGee are good enough to make several all-star teams.

Independents Bishop Moore: The 3A state champions are again the bet to repeat if they maintain their health. They play all comers, regardless of class. However, leading scorer George Telzrow broke an ankle and Luis Marer, another all-star, has injured a knee and Mark Keymont is nursing an injured back. That leaves Greg Ross, transfer Israel Hernandez, Pete Tresman, Bill Lewis and Pat Hegert. It'll be hard for the Hornets to improve on last year's 19-2-2 finish for Coach Larry McCorkle, who has made the upcoming schedule even tougher.

Gainesville: The step down to 3A has helped the Purple Hurricanes. They may surprise a lot of people for Coach Damien Young. The district will be hard because of road games to Jacksonville. Gainesville Buchholz: The Bobcats "will find out quickly just how ready they are, facing Boone in the Brave Invitational Dec. 21-22 under Coach John Plant.

Trinity Prep: The Saints have always been the best, but the prep numbers game has caught up. If Coach Ray Herod's squad can get past Bishop Moore, they may wind up district winners, but that doesn't seem possible right now. All-star candidates include Scott Miller, Jimmy Miliotes and Scott McAbee. Florida Air Academy: Always a power because of the foreign student enrollment. The program reached a pinnacle in 1977, knotted with Evans for third in the state tournament.

Daytona Father Lopez will lead Howey Academy and Florida Central for that district crown. Montverde lost Max Rodriguez and question mark Lake Highland is returning to the soccer scene after sitting last season out. Rockledge, Cocoa Beach and Gainesville P.K. Yonge are kicking off programs this year and Raider Coach Skip Arrick, said it all. "No one on the squad has ever seen a high school soccer match and only two have ever played before last year.

I do not expect a great won-lost record." is A Evans' soccer coach, Ernie Chandler, takes a preseason look at high school soccer in Central Florida for 1979 60. By ERNIE CHANDLER Five Star Conference Lyman: The Greyhounds won the district a year ago, as a result of the power Coach John Stone has developed. Seven starters return including seniors Carl McKnight, Tom Howard, Skip Van Peit, Mario Angelini, Jerry Schnelhous, Mike King, David McClel-lon, Stuard Henry and Jon Hass. This looks to be the year of the Greyhound. Lake Brantley: Coach Bob Stead-man's Patriots have owned the conference in past years, so don't bet against them.

They look to be down, but if the younger kids (15 juniors) get together, watch out. Dennis Kelly and Keith Simmons will work at half while R.C. Hill will score. Lake Howell: The Silver Hawks of Coach Robert Rosenberger have a tough road ahead. The Hawks appear to be loaded, but Lake Howell has a history of being snakebit.

The talent is there. If injuries don't crop up, this could be the year. DeLand: Chuck Flournoy's Bulldogs always hang on. They are always tough opponents, tying powerful Evans 2-2 and handing 4A champion Winter Park its only loss of the year last year. Although not a preseason pick to win the conference, the Bulldogs will notch their share of upsets.

Apopka: The new Five Star entry, directed by Coach Henry Sawyer, should finish near the middle of the pack, depending how quickly the newcomers and returning players gel. Sanford: Chuck Russakow may be new to Seminole soccer, but not the the high school sport. He took Coral Gables to the first state championship. "This year has to be an improvemnt over last year's one win," said Russakow. True, but the program still has a way to go.

Daytona Mainland, Spruce Creek and Seabreeze: None appear to have the horses. The Sandcrabs of Seabreeze under Coach Ken McMurray do have on edge. A 3A entry, Seabreeze doesn't have to engage the 4A schools to make the state playoffs. Spruce Creek is rebounding from a disappointing year. Coach Paul Skillern Jr.

could win more if the Hawks played at home, but Spruce Creek feels it's cheaper to play on the road. Mainland is the question mark under Coach Herbert Durtschi, The Buccaneer woe is inconsistency, playing super one day and average the next. If they put it all together, watch out. Metro Edgewater: Lou Houston's Eagles went to the state championship tournament in his second year. The Eagles want to go back and, with 10 letter-men five of those starters look for Edgewater to better last year's 16-3 mark.

Names to keep an eye on: John Hellinger, Keith Jones, Robert Smith and Craig Salee. Boone: The Braves are co-favorites to win the conference with 14 letter-men and all but one starter returning for Coach James Griffin. Paul Rsos, honorable mention all-state, could rewrite all Orange County scoring records. Greg Johnson is one of the two best goalkeepers in the area. "Boone has never had a strong winning tradition.

Winning is a tradition we want to establish," said Griffin. Other Braves to watch: Robert and Richard Leftwich and Brad Huff. Winter Park: The Wildcat orange and black have won over 70 games the past three years, including the 4A state crown last season. A new coach, Terry Offner, and a small number of returnees could make the coming season a disappointment. Only six of 30 lettermen (two starters) return from last year's 29-1-1 team.

However, names to watch include Sean Tobin, Jack Washburn, Paul Finora, Robert Heilman, Mike Delbene, Jeff Janszen, Bill McDonald and George Urban. Don't waste too many tears on Winter Park, the Wilcat JV has never been beaten and no Orlando team has done that since Evans in 1977. Colonial: John Klingmeyer returns as coach after a three-year absence. In his previous stay, the Grenadiers were Metro champs and fifth ranked in Florida. Four returning lettermen, all starters, key this year's hopes.

They are Scott Finnell, Dale Haun, Nick Solomon and Steve Wright. Oak Ridge: Coach Rich Roath feels "Oak Ridge should be well represented this year. We will be in a postiion to give everyone a run for the money. Depth will be a primary reason for optimism." Fourteen lettermen and seven starters are back from the 6-11-1 Pioneers of last year. Included in the force are Tim Womack, Todd Lazurus, Wayne Williams, Duane Brazell, Greg Evans, Leo Coleman and Bob Rolston.

West Orange: Dean Curtis is new to the Warriors, who" are new to the conference after four years in the Class 3A Orange Belt. Look for the Warriors to reverse their "weak team" image. Jose Rodriguez is a top scoring threat and an improved defense make West Orange a team to be reckoned with. Evans: Bad news in Pine Hills. Only two starters from the team that set a national scoring record (3.7 goals per game) return.
