C-A The Orlando Sentinel, Monday, March 4, 1985 Gunslingers sack Williams, Outlaws, 16-14 THE USFL MHjt Week 2 TT COMPILED FROM WIRE REPORTS SAN ANTONIO, Texas Defensive lineman Jeff Chaffin sacked Arizona Outlaws quarterback Doug Williams for a last-second safety Sunday to give the San Antonio Gunslingers a 16-14 victory. San Antonio (1-1) was scoreless FOOTBALL three and two plays. Birmingham's Cliff Stoudt passed for two scores and ran for another. The Gold jumped to a 26-14 halftime lead. Birmingham cut it to 26-21 on a 55-yard Stoudt pass to Joey Jones early in the third period.

But Denver retaliated with drives of 78 and 56 yards, capped by scoring runs by Evans and Johnson. Todd Gerhart ran for 119 yards and Johnson for 74 for Denver, which held Birmingham to 67 yards rushing. Stoudt completed 17 of 38 passes for 258 yards. Birmingham got three interceptions and two fumble recoveries in the first half. Chuck Clanton picked off the passes and got one of the recoveries.

Late Saturday Quarterback Doug Woodward passed for 185 yards, and running back Buford Jordan rushed for 110 to lead Portland over visiting Los Angeles, 14-10. Los Angeles quarterback Steve Young mounted three sustained drives in the fourth quarter. The Express' final drive came up short when when Duane Gunn caught a long pass and was tackled at the Breakers' 4-yard line as time expired. It was the Breakers' first victory of the season and first game in Portland after moving from New Orleans. This is the third city for the franchise, which originated in Boston.

A crowd of 25,000 welcomed the Breakers to their new home, the Civic Stadium. Los Angeles fumbled the ball away five times, including twice in the final period, and Young threw one interception. Los Angeles controlled the ball most of the first quarter and scored first on a 31-yard field goal by Tony Zendejas. Young set up the score with a 48-yard pass, but the drive stalled after three muffed plays, including a fumble. The Breakers scrambled back in the opening minutes of the second period, scoring on a five-play, 77-yard drive.

Woodward hit receiver Frank Lockett with a 32-yard pass for the touchdown. Invaders 17, Stars 17 OAKLAND, Calif. Bobby Hebert of Oakland threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Carter with 1 second left in the fourth period, forcing the game into overtime, but the Invaders had to settle for a tie with the defending champion Baltimore Stars. The Invaders (1-0-1), who trailed 17-0 late in the third period, drove 59 yards in 31 seconds for their final touchdown, which was followed by Novo Bojo-vic's extra-point kick. With 4:25 left in overtime, David Trout of the Stars missed a 49-yard field goal attempt.

Bojovic tried a 48-yard field goal with 1:47 left and the kick was blocked by Baltimore's George Cooper. Chuck Fusina of Baltimore (0-1-1) threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Victor Harrison four minutes into the game. The Stars' quarterback, who suffered a thumb injury in the season opener a week ago, added an 11-yard touchdown pass to Herbert Harris in the second period, and a 27-yard field goal by Trout in the third quarter made the score 17-0. Oakland's offense produced only five first downs and 101 yards before Hebert hit Gordon Banks on a 42-yard scoring pass as time ran out in the third quarter. Baltimore's Harris fumbled as he returned the kickoff opening the fourth quarter, the Invaders recovered, and Bojovic kicked a 40-yard field goal.

Gold 40, Stallions 23 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Vince Evans, directing a 564-yard run-and-shoot offense, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as Denver (1-1) defeated Birmingham (1-1). Evans completed 14 of 27 passes for 284 yards, including touchdown tosses of 48 yards to Vincent White and 39 yards to Leonard Harris. His 55-yard screen pass to Bill Johnson on Denver's first play set up the first of two touchdowns by Johnson. Three Denver scores came on drives of only two, until the fourth quarter, when it capitalized on a bad punt snap for one touchdown and turned a 69-yard pass from quarterback Rick Neuheisel to wide receiver Danny Buggs into another.

The Gunslingers hit paydirt for the first time after Arizona's Case de Bruikn dropped a bad snap on a punt try, picked it up and was tackled at his team's 2. Two plays later Scott Stamper went in from the 1. Arizona (1-1) upped the score to 14-7 by driving 75 yards in 12 plays. Kevin Long dove in from the 1. On the first play of San Antonio's next possession, Neuheisel connected with Buggs for a 69-yarder and a 14-14 tie.

Gunslinger Reggie Mathis blocked Arizona's next punt and Jim Bob Morris recovered at the visitors' 2-yard line. But San Antonio couldn't cross the goal line, and a faked field goal attempt ended in an incomplete Neuheisel pass. Arizona got off one play deep in its territory before Chaffin pounced on Williams for the winning safety. Arizona scored on its first possession of the game, driving 71 yards on 13 plays for its first touchdown of the season and a 7-0 halftime lead. The Gunslingers threatened once in the first half, driving 46 yards to the Arizona 9 before stalling out.

Nick Mike-Mayer's 33-yard field goal attempt never materialized after Neuheisel fumbled the snap. Arizona's Luis Zendejas failed on two field goal attempts, one 42 yards and the other 51. Verdin and McNeil also caught touchdown passes from Kelly, who has thrown for 835 yards and nine TDs in only two games this season.
