Cooper said the style of music will remain the same, but the station will be broadcasting live from its studio at 220 E. Hubbard Ave. during the mornings and afternoons. A local news staff also will be added, Cooper said. George McNeilly, now a reporter for WDBO in Orlando, will become news director.

Tim Le-Cras, a reporter for WWJX in Sanford, also will join the staff. Two WXVQ staff members, Rod Poole and Scot St. John will be promoted, Cooper said. Poole, now sales manager, will become operations and sales manager. St.

John, now an announcer, will get the job as program director. The university owned the station between 1949 and 1959. At that time, it operated under the call letters WJBS. The call letters were changed after the university sold the station. DELAND With the blessing of the Federal Communications Commission, Stetson University on Thursday bought the oldest radio station in the DeLand area.

A commission spokeswoman last week confirmed that approval of the sale had been given to both the university and WXVQ, the station that has been broadcasting in west Volusia County since 1948. Fred Cooper, the public information officer for the university who will become general manager of the station, said the $425,000 deal was closed Thursday. DeLand resident Rudi Gresham had owned the station. The university formed a corporation, called the St. Johns Valley to operate the station on a profit-making basis.

Cooper was named chief operating officer. Ownership of the operation also will be a step toward the university's goal of establishing within the next few years a school for students wanting to enter the broadcast and print media, )) ''-r-j -l!
