FLORIDA I I ,1111 IL I I l.ll JILI I ,1 I.IDH.I The Orlando Sentinel, Tuesday, July 2, 1 985 D-3 Error, age cited in VA hospital deaths Factors appear 72 percent of time in some hospitals' heart surgery ASSOCIATED PRESS BU VS IeT EMERSON QUIET KOOL? percent of the cases. The results do not represent the entire VA system, said Robert Putnam of the VA Department of Medicine and Surgery in Washington. The report was distributed to 12 members of a review group formed by VA Director John Ditzler last year after The News and Sun-Sentinel reported that more than a dozen VA hospitals had reported excessive deaths after heart surgery. The VA has 43 heart-surgery programs. The audits occurred only at those hospitals that reported heart-surgery death rates above 10 percent, which is twice the VA's national average.

The report also showed that "in most instances" heart surgery was performed by residents "in various stages of training" at VA-affiliated medical schools. The students worked under "direct supervision" of fully trained surgeons. But despite the pattern of errors, the VA's system reported overall death rates similar to those at New York state hospitals for every type of heart surgery except heart-valve replacement, which was higher in VA hospitals. New York is the only state that collects such data. Comparable data from private hospitals is not available.

The statistics are from an analysis of 119 cardiac-surgery deaths from 1980 to 1983 at VA hospitals with poor safety records, The Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel reported Monday. 'Directors of cardiac programs at the hospitals were asked by auditors to assess factors affecting deaths within 30 days of heart surgery. The directors reported that: In 56 percent of the cases, the patient was old and had advanced illness or other diseases that increased the risk of surgery. In 38 percent of the cases, there was error in 'operative technique." In 29 percent of the cases, the patient's heart was not adequately preserved during surgery.

In 23 percent of the cases, there was error of judgment. The court also declined to hear appeals from Allen Lee Davis, convicted of killing a Jacksonville woman and her two daughters, and from John Mills condemned in a Wakulla County murder. The court upheld rulings that Henderson received a fair trial for the 1982 slayings of three hitchhikers whose bodies were found in Hernando County. Henderson led police to the bodies of Vernon Odum, Robert Dawson and Frances Dickey.

Each had been shot once in the head. Henderson told police he had picked up the three victims as they hitchhiked near Panama City. The killings came during a murder spree that began in Ohio and ended when Henderson surrendered in Charlotte County, telling deputies that he had killed 12 people. Court documents filed with the justices did not state details of Mills' crime.

Hardy said beachings by pygmy sperm whales are fairly common, and said they usually die before or shortly after they are rescued.

He said the baby whale already has surpassed the two-day average life span of members of its species rescued after beaching. "It looks like we have a better than 50-50 chance," Hardy said. 1,000 pounds, was found on the beach about one-fourth mile west of Panama City. The two animals were taken to Gulf World and put into a tank together, Hardy said. "We really think that having the mother there for 24 hours is going to be a big help in getting the baby to adapt to this facility," he said.
