Paul's Episcopal Church, New Smyrna Beach. He worked for several years as a police officer and restaurant manager in Winter Park before being named police chief in Apopka. He was Apopka's chief from 1967 until mid-1969 when he became Maitland's chief. Law enforcement officials who worked with Jones in Apopka and Maitland praised his leadership and administrative skills. "He was well thought of by officers and a progressive chief," said Lt.

Ed Doyle of the Maitland Police Department. Jones created the Maitland department's first detective division and assigned a special officer to handle juvenile cases. "The changes proved beneficial to the community," Doyle said. Jones also spearheaded changes to better coordinate city and county law enforcement efforts. Jones, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was a past president of the Orange County Law Enforcement Council, past chairman of the Orange County Criminal Justice Planning Council, and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Florida Police Chiefs Association.

In 1969, Jones shocked other members of the state association when he demanded that black officers be allowed to join. Apopka Mayor John Land said Jones was popular in Apopka and had kept in touch with many of his friends there.
