Officer said boy could be arrested TOY from B-1 h.s yard on Man Ji'ss K-. li1. just wdSule the Kdu-wiKki city limits He u.in pivU'tuhfig to fnt a br'vT. and OuH'k toy rifle at birds when a pickup truck passed. The driver, who believed Jeffrey was aiming a real weapon, yelled at the child and left.

The dnvei came across Edmvixnl police Officer Oscar Soto not far away and told him of the armed 'youth. Soto said in his report that he rushed to the house, saw Jeffrey and ix'liev i the rifle was real. Jeffrey said the officer turned on his flashing lights, walked up and took the rule. Shirley Jones was watching the whole incident from her door, and said she became incensed with the officer's actions. "Your son could be arrested right now," she said Soto told her.

But she knew Soto was out of his jurisdiction and told him so. Soto was unavailable to comment but did speak with Edgewood Lt. Mark Cantell. saying he asked Jeffrey to let him see the gun. and that he then concluded it was a toy.

Cantell said Soto tried to talk to Jeffrey's mom about the danger of children playing with guns that look real. Cantell said Soto wanted to explain that motorists on the busy street might believe the rifle was genuine and veer off the road. "He could cause an accident." Cantell said. But Soto reported that Jones was argumentative and would not let him speak. They both called the Orange County Sheriff Office, which has jurisdiction in the area, and Deputy Dan Newlan arrived within minutes.

Newlan, by all accounts, was polite and tried to calm everyone. Jones said, however, that as Newlan was leaving, he told her that he would have drawn his weapon and pointed it at Jeffrey if the youth had pointed the toy at him. Newlan did not recall making that statement, but Cantell said Soto recalled hearing it. Newlan went to talk with Jeffrey Monday evening to convince him police officers are decent people. But Jeffrey needed no convincing.

His grandfather, who gave him the $5 toy rifle five years ago, retired as an Orange County deputy sheriff in 1987 after 20 years' service. "I know some of them are more qualified than others," Jeffrey said. Funeral notices Born in Ha.vtncnp. s'-e moved Cenra' Floda in 1990 A member of t. arte' Tabemacie CME Ciurch she a.
