CENTRAL FLORID; C-10 The Orlando Sentinel, Sunday. May 9, 1 993 Czech adds 2 Florida titles Ladley sets high jump mark the last time out at the District 5 championships, I could get it again." Jacksonville Bishop Kenny used four firsts and a second to reclaim the team title from defending champion Belle Glade Glades Central, which was second. The Crusaders, who won the championship two years ago, finished with 55 points, Mowed by the Raiders with 42. Ladley's effort led a contingent from Lake County that placed in the top three in several events, one of its best recent showings. Tavares senior Robbie Hall started by taking second in the discus, an event in which he has increased his personal best the past three meets and won two titles.

Hall's effort of 146-10 capped a day in which he consistently threw over 140 feet, though not enough to catch winner Michael Laisney of Miami Gulliver Prep (151-10). "I was doing so well that I actually thought I could win it," said Hall, who is headed for Duke University on a football grant-in-aid. "It was just a matter of doing one thing at a time and working on it until I got it right." Clermont senior Keith Enos took second in the shot put, but it took a final throw of 50-10 to move him from fourth place. Winner Clay Mu-sick of Tampa Catholic (51-3) put pressure on the competition from the outset with several tosses over 50 feet, but it was little consolation to Enos, seeded No. 1.

"I had to play catch-up to him all day," said Enos, who was third last season. "I was throwing a little bit too high. I'm happy I got second, but I could've won it this year." Umatilla sophomore Eric Porter kept things going in the evening finals by taking third in the 100 meters with a time of 10.90. He started near the back of the pack but surged down the stretch, streaking past a crowd to edge Rockledge's Taig Goins (10.91) and St. Augustine Nease's Jeremy Anderson (10.93).

Porter later took fifth in the 200 (22.20) and led the Bulldogs' 4x100 relay to a sixth-place finish (43.51). Eustis' Jason Merritt took sixth in the triple jump (43-1). from the pack halfway through the second and final lap. Schlomer finished second. Zajvaldova, a senior, recently received a full scholarship to Baylor University.

"It's been a great year coaching Maja," said Jeff Renihan, who coaches Zajvaldova along with Todd Wertenberger. She has a tendency to run with the competition, though. Maja has a real problem realizing her potential, but at Baylor I'm sure they'll take care of that." Others Central Floridians with impressive showings included JoAnn Wolfson of Cocoa Beach, who won the 400 (59.45); Umatilla's Jodie Seely, second in the shot put (34 feet, 6 inches); and Rockledge's Latrice Young, fourth in the 100 (12.75) and fifth in the 200 (26.27). Miami Archbishop Curley's Julienne Audelin dominated the dashes, winning the 100 (12.46) and setting a state meet record in the 200 (25.60). Rhonda Torrence of Mont Dora By Jeff Barlis SENTINEL CORRESPONDENT GAINESVILLE Maja Zajval-dova has been in the United States for one year, but the former Czechoslovakian junior champion is now a state champion in Florida.

Zajvaldova, of South Sumter High School, won the run with a time of 5:22.05 and the 800 (2:23.75) at the Florida Girls Class AA High School Track and Field Championships at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville on Saturday. In the 1,600, she broke free from a pack of four girls near the end of her fourth and final lap to claim the medal. Among those Zajvaldova pulled away from was Cocoa Beach's Erika Schlomer, who finished in fourth place. "It was close," Zajvaldova said. "My coaches have been telling me this whole time, 'You can win! You can In the 800, Zajvaldova emerged finished in sixth place in the long jump (15-10V4), and her teammate, Danielle Dennis, placed sixth in the high jump, clearing the 5-foot barrier.

Wildwood's Nakeia Hood finished in a tie with Shanks' Clean-ita Wiggins with a 12.85 time in the 100. Hood was picked in a photo finish as the sixth finisher. But none of the local medal winners could bring her team within striking distance of Belle Glade Glades Central, which rolled to the team title. Central's Phyllis Brooks won the long jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Her time of 43.01 in the 300 hurdles broke Nadrian McGill's 1990 time of 43.27, which was state record, and it was the fastest time in the nation this year.

Glades Central, the defending champion, finished with 86.5 points. Archbishop Curley was second (26) and Quincy Shanks (20) was third. Cocoa Beach (19) finished fourth and South Sumter (14) was seventh. By Gary Graves Of THE SENTINEL STAFF GAINESVILLE Umatilla senior Jeremy Ladley continued his hot streak in the high jump Saturday, breaking the meet record at the Florida Boys Class AA High School Track and Field Championships at Percy Beard Stadium. After two misses at 6 feet, 10 inches, Ladley cleared the height on las final attempt, breaking the previous record of 6-8 set by Wayne Clements of Flagler Palm Coast in 1989.

It was a partem Ladley maintained throughout the latter stages of the event: He missed twice, at 6-6 and 6-8, but stayed alive with successful final jumps at each height, the last of which knocked out Antwoine Allen of Port St. Joe, who vvas second at 6-6. "I was a little worried when I didn't clear 6-8," Ladley, who later missed three times at 7-0. "I just told myself that everybody else was out of the event, and it was a lot easier. I figured since I cleared 6-10 lute' Wildcats crew team sweeps to title "The girls did something they can be really proud of today, winning eight out of eight races.

That is something very hard to match." The eight victories also helped three of Winter Park's boats stay unbeaten. The Varsity 8, Third 8 and Fourth 8 all finished the season without a loss. "To be honest, I was expecting the 8s to do well," Lineberry said. "But we don't practice our 4s, so I wouldn't have been surprised if we got a couple of seconds in them." The Varsity 8 boat, unbeaten in the state championships for the past five years, won its race on the course in 5 minutes, 22.71 seconds. That was about five seconds better than Boone and more than 10 seconds ahead of Edgewater, Winter Park's two biggest competitors.

"I thought it would be a close Winter Park's women's Varsity 8 team cruises in a qualifying heat Saturday afternoon. wrjr Boys Class AA Championships race," said Wendy Zaklukiewicz, the seventh seat on the Varsity 8 team and, along with Lorena Mi-hok, one of two three-year state champions in the boat. "We really thought Edgewater was going to be closer, but we got a lot of open water on them. "Just because you go into the race undefeated doesn't mean you are going to win. Two years ago, we hadn't won a race going into the state championships, but we won here." Boone, which has never won the state title, proved tough for Winter Park to shake.

"I am extremely satisfied," said Boone boys coach Bill Palmer, who rowed on Edgewater's 1985 team. "This is a big improvement for us, and I think it goes back to the unbelievable dedication I've had from the kids." Edgewater's 1985 boys team was the last to sweep the state meet. The meet, which featured 15 schools from around the state, turned out to be a battle between Orange County rivals Winter Park and Boone. Winter Park won with 86 points, and Boone was second at 75. Edgewater finished third with 54, and Sarasota Riverview placed fourth with 49. "This is something that belongs to all 45 girls on the team," Winter Park girls coach Tom Lineberry said.
