I The Orlando Sentinel, Monday, September 5, 1994 Mikveh plays an important role MIKVEH from B-1 ing. After the ritual, which occurs about seven days after a woman's menstrual period has ended, the women may resume sexual relations with their husbands. Only a few Orlando-area women have been known to travel to other parts of the state to perform this rite, but Devorah Dubov knows of more women who are interested in using a mikveh closer to home. She and her husband, co-founders of the ultraOrthodox Chabad Lubavitch of Greater Orlando, hope to sponsor lectures about the mikveh to increase participation. Rabbi Yitzchok Adler, leader of a Jacksonville Orthodox synagogue with a mikveh, says Orlando's new mikveh is another sign that some Jews have decided to uphold traditions rather than blend into American 1 culture.

The number of mikvehs in Florida has increased as the Jewish population now 622,000 has grown. Rabbi Abraham Korf, the director of Friends of Lubavitch of Florida, says the Orlando-area mikveh is the state's eighth. Two more are in progress in South Florida. Korf traveled from Miami Beach to help oversee construction of the mikveh, which has many specific requirements according to Jewish law. For example, Devorah Dubov awaits "one good rain," which must drain from a rooftop gutter through a pipe into the bottom of the mikveh.

During the High Holy Days, observant men also use mikvehs in a rite to prepare for a new spiritual start on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur begins Sept.

14 and ends Sept. 15. Men and women also use the mikveh which means "contained gathering of water" in Hebrew when they convert to Judaism. Some local Jews predict the presence of the mikveh may encourage other Orthodox Jewish families to relocate to Orlando. "I believe that now there's an Orthodox synagogue and there's a mikveh, the Orthodox community will grow because young Jewish couples that are Orthodox would be very hesitant to move to this community unless there's a mikveh," said Terri Singer, who lives in Maitland not far from the mikveh.

She compared the spiritual experience to a rebirth. "You just feel new and you have a different shine to yourself a new glow," she said. ation. He was a Navy veteran of World War Il. Survivors: wife, Dolores; sister, Joaquina Roberto, Orlando.

Man Gives 3 Legs The Boot At Garage Sale. When Sam June holds his "Annual Backyard Estate Sale" in College Park, there's no telling what he might be selling. "The weirdest thing I ever sold was a bunch of mannequin parts to an elderly gentleman," June said. But the one constant every year for Sam is advertising his sale in The Orlando Sentinel's Classifieds.

"I strongly believe in the power of advertising," Sam says. This year's sale was as popular as ever. "At 8 o'clock we had 32 people waiting in line, and we were sold out by eleven." So no matter what you have lying around the house, chances are there's someone willing to buy it. And the best way for those people to find you is by placing an ad in The Orlando Sentinel's Classifieds. It won't cost an arm and a leg.
