Soon after, he moved to Central Florida and joined the Central Florida Stroke Club, a support group associated with the American Heart Association. There, he played recitals for other members. The club also inspired him to teach other stroke survivors how to play various instruments. For example, he taught Ed Porter, a friend and club member, how to play the keyboards after he suffered a stroke. DeCollibus "had the patience of a saint," said Charlotte Porter, Ed Porter's wife.

"Nicholas was SO proud when my husband played classical tunes." DeCollibus stopped playing for the club a few years ago after his health worsened. In the last couple of years, he was unable even to pick up a violin, friends said. "It was very hard to watch him go down," Barker said. DeCollibus was Catholic. for GAINESVILLE The University of Florida, the state's biggest college, has a smaller share of black administrators and professors on its faculty than the percentage for the State University System. The university's president, John Lombardi, recently was criticized for ethnic insensitivity for calling the new chancellor an "Oreo." Lombardi made his infamous remark at a Christmas party at his home. He later apologized by letter and in person to Adam Herbert, the first black higher education chancellor in Florida, saying the comment did not reflect his true feelings. But the university is lacking in efforts to recruit and hold onto black faculty members, The Gainesville Sun reported Wednesday. Academic leaders at UF cite nationwide intense competition for black administrators and faculty as a major factor hindering minority recruitment at the university with 42,000 students.

UF Provost Betty Capaldi said money is a problem for retaining all top faculty, but particularly minority professors who regularly field offers from other universities. "It makes it tough to keep people when the Legislature grants skimpy raises like it did this year," Capaldi said. In fall 1996, black faculty made up 3.3 percent of UF faculty members and academic administrators, figures from the Board of Regents show. UF's percentage of black faculty was less than half the overall system's percentage of 8.8 percent. However, UF data show steady increases in minority faculty hiring in the 1990s.
