Broken natural gas line proves nothing to sniff at MOUNT DORA The odor of rotten eggs that wafted over downtown Monday afternoon was caused by a leak in a natural gas line, firefighters said. A construction worker digging underground to install electric lines on Third Street near Baker Street accidentally ruptured a 2- inch gas main, Fire Lt. Ronnie Snowberger said.

Firefighters closed off the street from about noon to 1 p.m. and knocked on doors of about five homes nearby. Most residents weren't home, but those that were were asked to leave for a short time. A crew from TECO-Peoples Gas shut off the valve, and the leak was contained. Schools may seek return of unused bus stop funds TAVARES School Board Chairman Randy Wiseman said Tuesday he may ask the county to return money left over from a school bus stop lighting project. Last spring the School Board gave the county $30,000 to put lights at bus stops where children board in the dark during early mornings. But the cost was greatly overestimated, and the county ended up spending only $3,650, including installation and first year of operation. The county said it would put the more than $26,000 in excess cash away to cover future costs. But Wiseman and School Board member Kyleen Fischer said the money could go for more immediate school needs.
