Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Orlando, FL. 407-898-8111 By CHRISTINE COLE SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL Marvin "Mel" Fowler had careers in law enforcement, hotel management and as a restaurateur and chef. Most recently he co-founded Boston Lobster Feast, which now has three Orlando-area locations, and served as executive chef. Of all his careers, he liked creating in the kitchen best. "He could cook anything," said his wife, Constance Fowler.

"He always cooked for me. It was one of the things I liked best about him." He died Saturday of a stroke while battling lung cancer. He was 72. Born on New Year's Day in New Jersey, he grew up playing basketball, finally playing on a semi-pro team. After a stint in the Air Force, he joined the New Jersey State Police, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant detective, his wife said.

By 1976, he had retired, moved to Marco Island and snared a management job at the Marco Beach Hotel. "I ran a little bar nearby," said his wife. "Hotel employees weren't allowed to drink there, so they all came to my bar." The couple, who waited six years to marry, moved often, as he set up and opened beverage operations for newly built Hyatt Hotels in Atlanta, New Orleans, Breckenridge, Colo, and St. Louis. But always they had a plan.

They dreamed of opening their own restaurant. "We kept a journal and took it with us everywhere we went, from dives to fine restaurants," his wife said. "We would write down how the table was set, what the silverware looked like, how the chairs were designed." Putting their notes to work, they opened Place and, later, The Pines restaurants in Sli-dell, just a few miles north of Lake Pontchartrain, serving New Orleans- and American-style food. By 1985, they had sold the restaurants and moved to Osceola County, where he started a wholesale seafood business, delivering to Disney World and hotels. His partner in the Bar Harbor Lobster Company, Jeff Ha-zell, decided to open the first Boston Lobster Feast and hired Fowler to establish the menu.

"He was the hardest-working person I know," Hazell said. "He taught me everything I know and got me where I am today." His wife said mentoring others was just one of his skills with people. "He was nonjudgmental," she said. "People gravitated to him. "He was the kind of man who could get things done," she said.
