HOMES CREMATORY public-school system, teachers had to go by the textbooks but my mom wasn't like that," said son Jim Belden of Middleburg, Conn. He said she founded her own early learning center in Connecticut, called Creation Plus, and developed her own curriculum. Leveque earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in research from teachers colleges in Connecticut.

Son Mike Belden, also of Middleburg, recalled his mother's willingness to open their home to those in need. "We would have young children stay at our house over the weekends while the young parents tried to reconcile their relationship," he wrote in a tribute. "We had teenagers staying with us when they were having troubles with their parents." Leveque also is survived by another son, Robert Belden Jr. of Woodbury, a twin brother, Bruce Randall of Beaver, Utah; nine grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. By AMY LIMBERT SENTINEL STAFF WRITER Whether Marilyn Belden Leveque's students were learning about the ocean or practicing multiplication tables, it usually wasn't just from a textbook. Leveque's children and former colleagues said her unique approach to teaching, often through music, brought out the best in her students.

Leveque, a former Orange City Elementary School teacher, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. The Deltona resident was 71 A native of Water-bury, Leveque moved to Deltona in 1979 and taught at Orange City Elementary from 1980 through 1997. Daughter Elissa Ewing of Deltona said her mother preferred to approach the curriculum with "multi-sensory" teaching. Leveque's children said she dedicated her life to education. For example, if the class was learning about trees, Leveque would bring in a live tree, Ewing said.

"She taught how kids should learn," teacher Susie Wilson said. "She taught through music so much of the time. It was fun. They planted gardens. She made learning live for the kids." that in one of her mother's last evaluations from Orange City Elementary, the teacher was praised for tailoring the programs around the students' needs, such as assigning individual homework at each student's level.

It commended Leveque for her creative-writing ability and her ability to set the students up for success. Lynda Connell, a teacher at Orange City Elementary, said Leveque had a gift for seeing talents in children and drawing them out. Connell said her friend and former co-worker was the kind of teacher others aspired to be like. "Educationally, she was at the top," Connell said. "She was tremendous.

She made us all feel very special." Son Tom Belden of Deltona said he remembers his mother's teaching style as very enthusiastic. Leveque cultivated her unique teaching style from the beginning. Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale, aggressively went after state Sen. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, on Thursday, ridiculing his challenger's ideas and ethics before a friendly audience in Shaw's home territory. Klein was less direct in his criticisms. Without using Shaw's name, he suggested the 26-year incumbent is part of an old, out-of -touch mechanism. "There's a problem in Washington.

The integrity and the leadership is missing the ball. They've lost their focus. It's more about re-electing people and just keeping them in power than it is about protecting us and solving our problems," he said. "It's time for a change. It's time for new direction, new ideas and new ener- gy-" Shaw said afterward his approach was deliberate.

"I want to get him out so he will give us the idea of where he is going with some of this stuff, not talk in generalities and not sidestep issues," he said. "So yes, I was aggressive." Until now, the fiercely contested race for the Broward-Palm Beach County congres Klein said he was indignant about a Shaw attack on him for working as a lobbyist while serving as a state senator. He said he did nothing improper because he never lobbied in Tallahassee. "I am a lawyer. My law firm does some work from time to time on land use and a couple of other things.

I've never, ever lobbied the Florida Legislature. Never would." Shaw said he had never accused Klein of lobbying in the capital. "You are a lobbyist, there's no doubt about it When you're in politics, you have to be careful of who you represent." The overwhelmingly Republican audience of 170, filled with party leaders and business movers and shakers at the Tower Club in downtown Fort Lauderdale, was the friendliest possible territory for Shaw. When the group's president, Ann Meacham, asked at the end if any minds had been changed, the audience burst into laughter. One of the few Democrats in the audience, Michelle Tug-gle, said she was impressed with Klein.

"I thought he did excellent," she said, adding she probably would vote for him. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is a Tribune Publishing newspaper. sional district has been waged mostly through 30-second TV ads. After campaigning against each other for almost two years, both candidates used their first face-to-face debate to amplify their messages. Klein, who has spent much of the campaign depicting Shaw as a toady for the Bush administration, emphasized the need for change after years of the Republican-controlled regime in Washington.

Shaw, who has been attempting to distance himself from President Bush during the campaign, depicted himself as both an insider who can get things done and someone who is willing to say no to Bush and other party leaders. "When President Bush wanted to privatize Social Security I looked the president in the eye and I said no. No deal on privatization. When the sugar barons came in and told me they wanted to continue to pollute the Everglades, I told them no," Shaw said. The candidates ripped into each other about the television-ad campaign.

Shaw said a Klein spot suggesting Shaw had said the war in Iraq was over was misleading because it relied only on part of a quotation. Klein said it was fair because Shaw uttered the words in question. Second Anniversary The angels sang amazing grace, the Lord came down and touched your face.
