1962. Negro Duo Wins Stay Of Execution TALLAHASSEE UP) The Florida Supreme Court has stayed the executions of two Lake County Negroes under death sentence for the rape of a middle-aged Fruitland Park white woman. Chief Justice B. K. Roberts issued the order, to gether with a directive that the state attorney general show cause why the high court sh should not issue a writ of habeas corpus, which would open the way for a new trial.

The condemned men, Jerry Chatman and Robert Shuler, were saved from electrocution Sept. 6 when Circuit Judge Troy Hall of Tavares stayed their executions on the basis of new evidence. Tampa Atty. Francisco Rodriguez petitioned for a writ of habeas corpus, alleging that the two men were convicted by false testimony given by two Lake County deputy sheriffs, L. G.

Clark and James Yates. Rodriguez claims Yates and Clark rigged plaster casts of the accused men's footprints as evidence they were at the home of the victim the day of the crime. Rodriguez also alleged that the state prosecutor, Gordon Oldham and Sheriff Willis McCall of Lake County had a part in the plan to present false evidence. The state has been ordered to answer the show-cause order by 10 a.m. Oct.

11. Oldham has announced he is investigating the charges and 1 Judge Hall has referred the accusations to the Orange County grand jury. Cooper Gets Life Term Plus Ten CINCINNATI (P) Common Pleas Judge Simon Leis today sentenced John A. Cooper to life imprisonment for the second degree murder of his stepson. Cooper, 41, also received a one-to-10 year penitentiary term for mutilating the corpse of his victim, John C.

Jackson, 20. The sentences are to run consecutively. A Hamilton County Common Pleas Court jury convicted Cooper of the slaying after two hours and 25 minutes' deliberation Tuesday. He was not tried on the mutilation charge. Cooper admitted the youth was killed during a quarrel over a vacation trip Jan.

21. The defense contended the slaying was in self defense.
